Diversity
Ernst & Young has a long history of promoting diversity within our organization and across our industry. We’ve come to understand that diversity is not just about the mix of people in an organization. It’s also about how we leverage this mix in our culture to enable each one of us to achieve our full potential on behalf of our clients.
We want to arrive at a balanced focus that accounts for specific dimensions of diversity while deepening our understanding of similarities and differences. Our goal is to build a truly inclusive culture that focuses on respect for the individual, valuing varied opinions and building relationships. When we have that, we can successfully leverage individual talents, experiences and insights with a focus on business outcomes — not on personal characteristics.
Our Global Chairman and CEO, Jim Turley, has challenged our global organization to commit time, resources and executive leadership to arrive at this refreshed vision of diversity and inclusiveness. Our global management team has identified diversity and inclusiveness as one of two “transformational” priorities for Ernst & Young. Our Global Diversity and Inclusiveness Leader has counterparts in each of our major geographic areas, including Americas Inclusiveness Officer Billie Williamson who leads a multi-functional team that advises our people and teams on effective inclusive strategies and practices.
In the field, senior human resources professionals perform the roles of Inclusiveness and Flexibility Leaders. Their charge is to drive change locally by working closely with our business unit leaders, local line partners and principals, local human resources professionals and local affinity groups. And we measure our efforts with quantitative and qualitative metrics that include elements of our Balanced Scorecard, holding our people accountable annually for specific targets and achievements.
CEO Message
"It’s time to understand and embrace the enormous advantage that differing viewpoints can have on our companies, our countries and our global economy. Different viewpoints being expressed in discussions about issues always lead to better decisions being made. It leads to more opportunities being discovered, more innovative ideas being developed and a more critical assessment of risk. I have experienced it personally, and the evidence is clear and convincing."
– Jim Turley, Chairman and CEO
“At Ernst & Young, we pride ourselves on attracting, developing, and retaining the best people. It makes sense to foster an environment in which all of our highly talented people feel respected and supported so they can do their best work every day. Being inclusive – whether there are differences in ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or abilities – is a business imperative for us. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made at increasing awareness, educating our people, and working to make sure we support our people with differing abilities in the most effective ways.”
– Steve Howe, Americas Managing Partner
